What Kind of Help Is Available?

VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program

The Veterans Homemaker and Home Health Aide benefit provides help from a trained caregiver right at home—someone who assists with everyday tasks like bathing, grooming, dressing, light housekeeping, meal prep, and medication reminders.

This kind of care keeps people in their homes longer. And when done right, it keeps them safer, healthier, and more connected.

VA Respite Care Program

Being a caregiver is a full-time job—and even heroes need rest. This benefit allows for short-term home care services that give family caregivers a break while ensuring their loved one receives quality care.

  • Like the HHA program, eligibility depends on a clinical evaluation.
  • Veterans must meet one or more of the same criteria: multiple ADL dependencies or significant cognitive decline.

Aid and Attendance & Housebound Allowance

These VA pension benefits offer monthly financial assistance to veterans and survivors who need help with daily activities or who are largely confined to their homes due to illness or disability.

You may qualify if:

  • You need regular help with tasks like bathing or dressing
  • You’re mostly homebound due to a medical condition
  • You live in a nursing facility due to a disability
  • You have severe vision loss

To apply, you’ll need to complete VA Form 21-2680, with documentation about your loved one’s daily limitations and care needs. (We can help you get started.)

Important: Veterans cannot receive both Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits at the same time.
